Best Moisturizer for Baby Eczema: What Pediatricians Recommend

If your baby has eczema, you’ve probably spent more time than you expected standing in the skincare aisle wondering which moisturizer is actually best.

Creams, lotions, ointments, balms — there are countless options, and labels like “natural,” “gentle,” and “for sensitive skin” don’t always tell parents what they really need to know.

As pediatricians, one of the most important things we tell families managing eczema is this: protecting and moisturizing the skin barrier is a fundamental part of eczema care.

In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics considers moisturizers, or emollients, a cornerstone of atopic dermatitis (eczema) treatment. For mild eczema, moisturizers may be a primary part of treatment, while children with moderate or severe eczema typically need moisturizers alongside medications and a treatment plan from their pediatrician or dermatologist.

What Happens to the Skin Barrier in Baby Eczema?

Healthy skin acts like a protective wall. It helps keep moisture inside while keeping irritants and allergens out.

With eczema, that barrier doesn’t function as effectively. The skin loses moisture more easily, contributing to the familiar cycle of dryness, irritation, itching, and inflammation.

That’s why moisturizing isn’t simply about making your baby’s skin feel softer. Regular use of an appropriate moisturizer helps support the skin barrier and reduce excessive dryness.

What Do Pediatricians Look for in an Eczema Moisturizer?

There isn’t one moisturizer that works perfectly for every baby. However, there are several characteristics we generally look for when choosing products for eczema-prone or sensitive skin.

1. Thick, Barrier-Supporting Formulas

For eczema-prone skin, thicker products are generally preferred over thin lotions.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends thick, fragrance-free moisturizers for children with atopic dermatitis, and the American Academy of Dermatology notes that creams and ointments are generally more effective for dry, eczema-prone skin than lotions.

Why?

Lotions contain more water and tend to evaporate more quickly. Rich creams, ointments, and balms provide a more substantial protective layer that helps reduce moisture loss.

2. Fragrance-Free Products

This is one of our biggest recommendations as pediatricians.

Fragrance can irritate sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

And there’s an important distinction between fragrance-free and unscented. “Unscented” products can still contain fragrance ingredients designed to mask other odors, while fragrance-free products are formulated without added fragrance.

For babies with sensitive skin, simpler is often better.

3. Ingredients That Help Support the Skin Barrier

A good moisturizer should do more than temporarily make dry skin feel smooth.

We look for ingredients that help soften the skin, replenish lipids, soothe dryness, and create a protective layer that reduces moisture loss.

Ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, mango butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and vitamin E can play different roles in moisturizing and supporting dry, sensitive skin.

4. A Formula You'll Actually Use Consistently

The best moisturizer is ultimately one that works well for your child's skin and that you can use regularly.

Consistency matters.

For children with eczema, moisturizers should generally be applied at least daily and often more frequently depending on how dry their skin is. Applying moisturizer shortly after bathing — while the skin is still slightly damp — can be particularly helpful for locking in hydration.

Why We Created Roo Organics Moisturizing Barrier Balm

As pediatricians, we spent years talking with parents about eczema, dry skin, irritation, drool rash, and other common childhood skin concerns.

We kept coming back to the same problem: parents wanted something gentle enough for delicate skin, effective enough for persistent dryness, and simple enough that they could feel comfortable using it regularly.

That was a major reason we created Roo Organics Moisturizing Barrier Balm.

Rather than simply choosing ingredients because they were trendy or sounded “natural,” we researched our ingredients through the lens we use when caring for our own pediatric patients: Is it necessary? Is it gentle? Does it serve a purpose?

The result is a rich, pediatrician-formulated balm designed specifically to moisturize, soothe, and protect sensitive skin.

What Makes Roo Different?

A Rich Barrier Balm Rather Than a Thin Lotion

Roo's Moisturizing Barrier Balm creates a protective layer over the skin that helps seal in hydration.

This makes it especially useful for areas that tend to become very dry or irritated — including cheeks, hands, knees, elbows, and other eczema-prone spots.

Colloidal Oatmeal

Oat-based ingredients have a long history of use in products designed for dry and sensitive skin.

Colloidal oatmeal helps soothe and moisturize dry, irritated skin while supporting the skin barrier, which is why it is one of our favorite ingredients for eczema-prone skin.

Shea Butter + Mango Butter

We chose rich plant-derived butters including shea and mango butter to provide emollient support.

They help soften dry skin and provide the lipid-rich texture we want in a barrier-focused moisturizer.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a lightweight emollient that helps soften and condition dry skin.

We especially like it in children's skincare because it allows us to provide additional moisturization while maintaining a gentle, nourishing formula.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil helps moisturize and soften dry skin and contributes to the balm's rich, protective texture.

Beeswax

Beeswax helps create the protective quality of a true barrier balm. It forms a layer over the skin that helps reduce moisture loss while protecting delicate skin from everyday exposure to dryness and friction.

What We Left Out Matters, Too

When dealing with sensitive baby skin, we're just as interested in what's not in a formula.

Roo's Moisturizing Barrier Balm is formulated without:

  • Synthetic fragrance

  • Parabens

  • Phthalates

  • Sulfates

  • Oxybenzone

  • PEGs

  • Dyes

  • Formaldehyde releasers

  • Propylene glycol

  • Steroids

We also avoid ingredients on the National Eczema Association's Ecz-clusion list when developing our products.

Our goal isn't to make the longest ingredient list possible. It's to formulate thoughtfully for the unique needs of children's sensitive skin.

How to Moisturize a Baby With Eczema

One of the simplest changes parents can make is moisturizing at the right time.

After a short bath in lukewarm — not hot — water, gently pat your baby's skin so that it remains slightly damp. Then apply moisturizer liberally.

Think of it as soak and seal: add water to the skin and then use your moisturizer to help seal that hydration in.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends applying moisturizer daily regardless of bathing frequency, and children with very dry skin may benefit from more frequent application.

Roo's balm can also be reapplied to particularly dry areas throughout the day as needed.

Is Roo Organics Moisturizing Barrier Balm an Eczema Treatment?

This distinction is important.

Roo's Moisturizing Barrier Balm is a moisturizer and skin barrier product — not a medication or cure for eczema.

Moisturization is an important part of eczema management, but some children also require topical steroids, other prescription medications, or additional treatment under the guidance of their pediatrician or dermatologist.

If your baby's eczema is severe, worsening, oozing, crusting, painful, disrupting sleep, or not improving with gentle skincare and regular moisturization, talk with your child's healthcare provider.

So, What Is the Best Moisturizer for Baby Eczema?

There isn't one product that's perfect for every baby.

But as pediatricians, we generally recommend looking for a moisturizer that is:

Thick. Fragrance-free. Gentle. Barrier-supporting. And easy to use consistently.

Those same principles guided us when we formulated Roo Organics Moisturizing Barrier Balm.

We wanted to create the kind of product we would feel comfortable discussing with families looking for a simple, gentle moisturizer for their child's sensitive, dry, or eczema-prone skin.
